KATHMANDU, January 20

Nepal on Thursday witnessed the surge of over 10,000 new Covid-19 cases, shattering its previous day record where 9,502 infections were detected.

The Ministry of Health and Population reported 10,052 coronavirus infections detected by PCR test in the past 24 hours. Likewise, 2286 people tested positive via Rapid Antigen Diagnostic Tests amounting to a total of 12,338 cases.

On the other hand, the countrywide Covid-19 mortality toll increased to 11,632 with four more fatalities in the same duration.

Meanwhile, total recoveries stand at 818,809 with 649 discharges logged today.

The country's active Covid-19 case count currently stands at 57,328, as against 47,929 as reported a day ago.

As per the latest data provided by the health ministry, a total of 27,497 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours of which 21,007 were PCR tests while 6,490 were antigen tests. With this, a total of 5,075,205 PCR tests have been carried out till date.

Nepal's Covid-19 recovery rate stands at 92.2%, while the fatality rate stands at 1.4%.

Currently, there are 125 individuals in various quarantine facilities across Nepal.

Among all 77 districts, the capital logged the highest number of 24-hour cases with 5001 infections. Lalitpur is second in line with 1,130 cases while Bhaktapur reported 850 of the same.

Globally, over 339 million people have been infected by the novel coronavirus while 5.5 million people have lost their lives to the disease.

Likewise, over 273 million people have recovered while more than 60 million cases are still active.
