Dalit body submits memo to Prachanda

KATHMANDU: The Joint Political Dalit Struggle Committee today handed over a memorandum to Unified CPN-Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda'.

They have put forth a 13-point charter of demands to be incorporated in the new Constitution and a 20-point charter of demands for the government.

The demands include 10 per cent additional rights besides the proportional representation of Dalit communities in various state mechanisms. They have also demanded a special privilege card and subsidy in education, transportation and ration, among other things.

Further, the meeting of the committee held here today decided to gherao the district administration offices nationwide and organise a sit-in in front of the Constituent Assembly hall in New Baneshwor on February 1. A nationwide interaction programme is scheduled for February 6.

The committee is a loose body of Dalit organisations aligned to seven different political parties. It's members include Tilak Pariyar of the UCPN-Maoist, Chhatra Bahadur Tailor of Nepal Dalit Association affiliated to the Nepali Congress and Lal Bahadur Bishwokarma of the CPN-UML.
