Damak tense as irate students clash with cops

DAMAK: Damak Bazaar remained tense today following a clash between students and the police. The students were demonstrating at Damak Chowk to protest the death of Bibek Basnet, a student at Siddhartha Higher Secondary School.

Basnet, who was attacked by unidentified persons yesterday, died undergoing treatment in a hospital. Police detained four persons — Dipen Chemjong, Roshan Bhandari, Mahesh Sharma and Bibas Shah — after they vandalised a public vehicle.

Activities in higher secondary schools in the district were also brought to a halt. The students demonstrated claiming that a person called Sapan Sarkar of Damak-12 was involved in Basnet’s murder.

Nabin Karki, Police Inspector at the Area Police Office said that they had detained accused Sarkar for investigation and sent Basnet’s body to Bhadrapur Hospital for autopsy. He added that investigation was underway.

Meanwhile, four students were injured in a clash among students at Unique College today. Police said that Subash Rai, Pramod Rai, Min Tamang and Aita Limbu injured in the clash have been sent to Dharan for treatment.
