Death toll reaches 15 in Province 1, six still missing

At least 15 persons have lost their lives and six have gone missing in Province-1 in incidents related to floods and landslides caused by incessant rainfall.

According to Provincial Police Office, Biratnagar, five persons lost their lives in Bhojpur and three persons each died in Khotang and Okhaldhunga.

One each died in Ilam and Sunsari, and two died in Jhapa. As per police record, three persons have been missing in Morang, and one each has been missing in Sunsari, Jhapa and Panchthar.

According to the Provincial Police Office, Khaputi Sherpa, 40, and his 12-year-old daughter Yangji of Patle in Molung Rural Municipality-7, Okhaldhunga died after landslide struck their home at about 11am today. Their bodies were recovered three hours later.

Similarly, body of Pasang Sherpa, 85, of Chisungkhugadhi Rural Municipality-4, who was buried in a landslide on Thursday, was recovered today.

In Bhojpur, the deceased have been identified as Mana Kumari Rai, 35, Shakti Kumar Rai, 15, and Jagat Bahadur, 66, of Ram Prasad Rai Rural Municipality and Janak BK, 14, of Tyamkemayum Rural Municipality-4. While Mana Kumari of Ram Prasad Rai RM-5 died after her house caved in on her this morning, Jagat Bahadur of ward number 7 of the same municipality died in a similar incident yesterday.

Likewise, BK also died when he was crushed under a latrine that collapsed on him, yesterday.

In Jhapa, nine-year-old Saugat Chapagain died after he was swept away by Baniyanikhola stream in Salmara of Shibasatasi Municipality-5. Chapagain had slipped into the stream while he was playing with his cousin on its bank and was swept away, today. His body was found later during a search operation. Similarly, another minor, 6-year-old Elija Neupane was swept away by a local stream in Damak Municipality-10, yesterday.

While in Ilam, Anchal Lawati, 50, of Chulachui-1 was swept away by a local river. In Khotang, 28-year-old Rekha Rai, and her sons — Roman Rai, 4, and seven-month-old, Rohan Rai, died after a landslide buried their home in Khotehang Rural Municipality-2, last night. In Sunsari, Sagar Thapa, 35, of Udayapur died after he was swept away by a river in Itahari, this morning.
