Deepak Manange arrested

Kathmandu, April 19

Kathmandu police today arrested Province 4 Provincial Assembly member Rajib Gurung alias Deepak Manange from Kathmandu.

Senior Superintendent of Police Bishwa Raj Pokharel of Kathmandu Metropolitan Police Range said Manange was arrested from Teendhare of Swoyambhu this evening and was being kept at Kathmandu Metropolitan Police Range. He will be produced before the court tomorrow following which he will be sent to jail.

He was on the run since the Supreme Court upheld the Patan Appellate Court’s verdict to jail him for five years in an attempted murder case.

Patan Appellate Court had convicted Gurung five years ago for attempting to murder Milan Gurung alias Chakre Milan in 2007. Manange, who had spent two years in jail in the case, will have to serve three years more in the jail.

Manange could have challenged his conviction within 130 days, but did not do so and cannot do so now.

The police had issued a red corner notice against him. Fearing arrest, Manange did not take the oath of office and secrecy as PA member and had been absconding.

Manange, who won the PA seat from Manang province (B) in the provincial election, would have been disqualified from contesting elections had anyone filed a complaint during the Provincial Assembly elections citing his conviction.
