60TH ENGINEERS' DAY

KATHMANDU, JULY 19

Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has underlined the need to undertake development efforts in line with the needs of the nation.

He said this while addressing a ceremony to mark the 60th Engineer's Day of Nepal Engineers' Association here today. The PM stressed the development of roadways, bridges, irrigation, hydropower projects and information technology to take the country towards prosperity.

The prime minister said cost-efficient, standard and environment-friendly infrastructure development was the foundation for a new Nepal and our attention should be focused on such infrastructure. "Time demands that engineers contribute to sustainable and environment-friendly development and quality improvement in people's livelihood."

He stressed that engineers should actively localise and channelise new innovations in science and technology and infrastructure development efforts as per the need of the nation to take the country towards prosperity.

The prime minister said engineers had a leading role to play in carving a path for national development and economic prosperity and in the development of the nation as per the people's needs and interest. The global demands contribute to the development of a modern nation as well. He pledged to ensure support from the government to further capacity enhancement of engineers. He also urged engineers to maintain professional values and dignity. PM Deuba described engineers as significant development activists and contributors to change.

Also speaking on the occasion, Minister of Physical Infrastructure and Transport Mohammed Istiyak Rai acknowledged the role of engineers in drafting the modern development of the nation, and urged them to pay special attention to infrastructure development as it was the backbone of the nation's economic development.

"Construction of sustainable structures is mandatory to upgrade Nepal to the category of developing nation and dedication and meaningful involvement of government and private sector engineers is necessary for this."

He added that engineers were also responsible for addressing voices raised in relation to the quality of sustainable development endeavours.

Association Chair Hari Bahadur Darlami said engineers/architects had a key responsibility to meet the people's aspiration for development and the State should also realise its role in addressing the problems of people in this profession.
