Docs’ role in cancer control stressed

Kathmandu, August 28:

Minister for Health and Population, Giri Raj Mani Pokhrel, today said medical personnel must play an important role in spreading awareness on the prevention of cancer.

“Doctors should start a campaign to raise awareness about cancer and its treatment. This is the need of the hour,” he said, while inaugurating the Brachytherapy Unit at Om Hospital.

Brachytherapy is an advanced cancer treatment through internal radiation. Dr Bhola Rijal, senior gynaecologist said, “The government should take initiatives to establish cancer units in every hospital to serve cancer patients.”

Oncologist Dr Tara Manandhar said, “Uterine Cervical Cancer is the most common problem in Nepali women and Brachytherapy is the standard treatment for the ailment. She was awarded with the ‘Om Samman’.

Other cancer specialists also highlighted the need of awareness raising programmes about cancer and its treatment.
