Dolakha VDC secys' non-cooperation halts reconstruction works

DOLAKHA: Village Development Committee secretaries of Dolakha district have warned that they would not support the National Reconstruction Authority to carry out its functions until their demands were met.

The VDC Secretary Welfare Protection Centre on Sunday held a meeting with Chief District Officer Pushpa Raj Shahi, NRA Sub-regional Chief Hari Prasad Sharma and Local Development Officer Bishnu Prasad Sharma and warned of non-cooperation putting forth a five-point memorandum.

The Centre demanded that each VDC have a designated secretary, the secretaries be given promotion allowances and the government ensure their security among others.

"We are not machines," Bhirkot VDC Secretary said, "How long should we work?"

"We had cooperated with the government in performing various functions for people and providing relief and constructing temporary shelters after the earthquake. Now, we cannot cooperate anymore."

As many as 13 VDCs of the district do not have secretaries currently.

Meanwhile, the NRA halted implementation of its plan to distribute the first installment of Rs 50,000 as an allowance for reconstruction of houses of the quake-affected families for the time being owing to protests of the secretaries.
