RAJBIRAJ, AUGUST 24

A victim of domestic violence, who had earlier been expelled from her home, was rehabilitated following the court's order in Rajbiraj.

A mother of two, Paliya Khatun, 24, was rehabilitated in her home in Rajbiraj Municipality this afternoon in the presence of advocate Kiran Kumari Sah, journalists, elected local representatives and others.

Paliya of Badage of Kanchanrup Municipality was married to Aashik Shekh of Rajbiraj four years ago. While her in-laws are said to have been reluctant to get her marriage registered thus far and make her citizenship certificate, Paliya also shared about the continuous pressure she has faced from her in-laws for additional dowry.

Paliya's parents had provided 400,000 rupees in cash and furniture worth 300,000 rupees in dowry when she was married with Aashik. After she was beaten and evicted from her house over additional dowry demand six months ago, she was taking shelter at her sister's home. Subsequently, she had also filed a domestic violence case with Saptari District Court, seeking justice.

Advocate Kiran Kumari Sah, who is also the Madhes Province legal officer, had offered free legal service to Paliya. Regarding the case, a single bench of judge Rajendra Kumar Acharya had issued an interim protective order for Paliya until the final verdict in the case. The order issued has it that Paliya, along with her two sons, be allowed to stay in her home and be spared from any physical and verbal abuse.
