Don’t target schools, minister tells agitators

Kathmandu, November 1

Education Minister Girirajmani Pokharel today urged the agitating Madhes-based parties to allow schools to resume classes.

During a discussion with various student organisations at the Ministry of Education in Singha Durbar Sunday, Minister Pokharel said he had already requested the agitating Madhes-based parties to allow schools to resume classes.

The United Democratic Madhesi Front has been agitating in the Tarai-Madhes protesting the provisions of the newly-promulgated constitution.

“Disruption of academic activities would have an adverse impact on the students.

So, I request the agitating Madhes-based parties not to target schools and academic institutions,” he added. He also said that he would soon make public a roadmap for bringing about reforms in the education sector.

On the occasion, student leaders, including ANNFSU Chair Kishor Bikram Malla, Nepal Students Union Spokesperson UP Lamichhane, ANNISU (Revolutionary) Coordiantor Ramesh Malla demanded implementation of past agreements and enhancement of the quality of education in community schools.
