Drought leads to male exodus

Bajura locals have been reeling under shortage of food due to the long drought.

The male youths of the district have left for foreign lands in search of jobs.

The youths from Sappta, Gotri, Wai, Jaganath, Badhu, Rugin, among 10 other VDCs in the northern part and Dahachowk, Manakot and Kanda VDCs in the southern part of the district have left for India for employment.

Sources at District Agriculture Development Office, Bajura revealed that as many as 35 per cent of the youths had left their villages and had gone to foreign lands in search of jobs for livelihood.

Chief of the office Ram Krishna Shrestha said that at least one youth each from the houses in these places had left for India in search of jobs.

According to the District Agriculture Development Office, Bajura, as many as 60 per cent food grains were destroyed completely due to the long drought in the VDCs.

Shrestha added that the locals could not produce seasonal food grains and the youths were compelled to leave their villages to eke out a living.

The sources said that more than 80 per cent of the total population has been reeling under food crisis. It is said that the locals eat less and have begun to migrate to other places after food grains ran out in the houses.

As many as 13 VDCs of the districts have been affected the most due to the drought.

“The long drought has increased the plight of the locals,” Shrestha added.

Local teacher Man Bahadur Rokaya of Sappta VDC said that the villages lacked male youths and it was very difficult to find males during a death procession.

Civil Forum Chairman Lal Bahadur Shahi of Wai VDC said the males had left for foreign jobs and children and elderly citizens could not be engaged in work.
