Drug and alcohol abuse blamed for alarming rise in rape cases in Province 7

Increase in rape cases in Province 7 has been attributed to the alarming rise in drug and alcohol abuse.

A study conducted by police, right activists and psychologists showed that people addicted to drugs and alcohol were involved in most rape cases.

Regional director of National Human Rights Commission Dipakdhoj Jung Karki said incidents rape had increased due to rise in the number of alcohol and drug abuse. According to psychologist Goma Acharya, a person addicted to drugs is likely to be involved in criminal activities.

The rape and murder cases have been increasing in Kailali and Kanchanpur. Nirmala Panta, 13, of Bhimdatta Municipality was killed after she was raped some two weeks ago. Similarly, Maya BK, 11, of Gauriganga Municipality, Kailali, was murdered after she was raped a month ago while Kalpana Bista, 17 of Kanchanpur was also murdered.
