KATHMANDU, MAY 31

The East-West Highway has been completely blocked after continuous rainfall since Friday morning swept away a road diversion at Kalikhola in Mechinagar Municipality-6, Jhapa.

According to police, the diversion-part of the under-construction Asian Highway-was destroyed by flooding, bringing traffic to a halt.

Authorities have opened an alternative route and are coordinating with relevant agencies for road reconstruction.

Meanwhile, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology reported heavy rainfall across Jhapa, Ilam, Sunsari, and Dhankuta. It has urged the public to remain alert, warning of possible floods in the Mechi, Ninda, Kankai, Mawa-Ratuwa, and Bakraha rivers.

Earlier on Friday, Vehicular movement along the Narayanghat-Butwal road section had come to a complete halt after floods swept away temporary diversions at Chormara and Dumkibas in Nawalparasi (Bardaghat Susta East) late Thursday night.
