EC to maintain photo record of voters

KATHMANDU: Election Commission (EC) is all set to maintain a photographic record of voters and use electronic voting machines to check bogus voting in the next elections.

“Use of electronic voting machines and citizenship certificates proved effective during the by-election held on April 10. Now we are planning to maintain photographic record of voters and use electronic voting machines to ensure fair and fair polls,” said Nil Kantha Upreti, Election Commissioner.

Addressing a function organised by Democracy and Election Alliance Nepal (DEAN), Upreti added that the process could take up to two-and-a-half years. He said monitoring agencies would not be required if the political parties were competent and people had faith in EC.

Subhadayak Shah, member secretary, DEAN, said voters were often confused whether they voted the right candidate while using EVM.
