Election Commission re-demands right to announce polls

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission on Sunday has reiterated that it should get the authority of declaring election dates and managing the officials for the election purpose.

Chief Election Commissioner Ayodhi Prasad Yadav, speaking at a meeting of the State Affairs Committee under the Legislature-Parliament today, said that the authority should be with the Commission to make the elections fair and trustworthy.

The Committee has begun discussions on rights and responsibilities of the Commission, political parties, voters list among others as the laws required amendment in line with the Constitution promulgated last year.

On the occasion, lawmakers stressed holding three-tier elections to ease the process for the Constitution implementation.

Similarly, speaking at the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Bimalendra Nidhi assured that the government was preparing to hold elections at local, provincial and federal levels in the stipulated time.

In another context, Minister Nidhi said that the Constitution should be amended for genuine reasons adding that it was a progressive document.
