EC to start voter registration from Sunday

Kathmandu, April 12

The Election Commission said it would start voter registration from Sunday in all its regional and district offices throughout the country.

A meeting of EC office bearers chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Ayodhi Prasad Yadav took a decision to this effect, according to a press release issued by EC Deputy Spokesperson Mukunda Sharma.

The poll panel stated that new and eligible voters could apply to register, update, remove or transfer their names in the nearest district or regional offices.

“Voter registration service will be available in all 77 district election offices and regional offices,” said Sharma. He said voters could not receive registration service from other districts other than their respective districts.

According to Sharma, voter registration service would be available in local levels and ward offices only during the registration drive, which would be organised for a month or so. The poll panel stated that every year about six lakh new voters were added across the country. There are over 15.4 million eligible voters in the country.

Meanwhile, Election Commissioner Narendra Dahal said that the EC would hold a review meeting to analyse peace and security concerns raised during local level, provincial and parliamentary elections, poll code violations, poll expenditure and people’s feedback about the EC’s role. He said the poll panel would adopt corrective measures, if needed.

According to Dahal, the election body would also dwell on the Supreme Court directive to the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers and other ministries concerned, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Election Commission, to ensure external voting rights for over four million Nepali voters living in 110 countries.
