EC warns left alliance against arm twisting

Kathmandu, January 3

The Election Commission today asked political parties not to pressure it to announce parliamentary proportional representation election results.

Issuing a press release today, EC Spokesperson Dinesh Kumar Ghimire said the EC’s attention was drawn to allegations that the poll panel was reluctant to announce parliamentary PR results and was surprised by anarchic activities launched to undermine its prestige. The EC’s warning comes after sister wings of the alliance partners took to the streets demanding immediate announcement of parliamentary PR election results.

Leaders of the left alliance comprising the CPN-UML and the CPN-Maoist Centre had gone to the EC demanding immediate announcement of parliamentary PR results.

The EC said results of parliamentary PR election were associated with NA election as per Section (8) of Article 84 (8) of the constitution and Member of the House of Representatives Election Act, and the poll panel would follow the constitution and respective laws.

The EC’s statement adds that the poll panel will announce parliamentary PR results, as well as ask parties to recommend names of winners from their PR list, only after National Assembly election.

It also appealed to political parties not to overlook constitutional and legal provisions. The EC urged parties not to cast aspersions on the constitutional election management body.
