Elephant mistakenly trapped to dead in community forest in Kanchanpur

DHANGADHI: An elephant has been killed by a group of poachers at Punarbas Municipality-10 in Kanchanpur district, on Thursday night, said the Disrict Forest Office.

Acting Forest Office at the DFO Bir Bahadur Thagunna confirmed that the elephant was killed by laying a trap inside the local Namuna Community Forest yesterday night.

A preliminary report shows that the poachers had planted the trap to catch a boar, however, the male elephant got trapped instead, informed Thagunna.

Following the incident, a team from the DFO is investing into the incident.

Thagunna further said that the postmortem was carried out on the dead elephant, a search for the poachers has been launched.

Similarly, due to recent disaster in the district, most of the school flood swamped in the areas have remained closed till date. Scores of students have been compelled to stay back home as their schools have not resumed.

Local Samiksha Chaudhary of Bhajani Municipality, 5th grader at the Tripura Sundari Primary School in Khaira in the district have been killing her time by playing for the whole day as her school has submerged in the inundation.

One of the students affected by flood, Ganga Shahi was worried about her studies as her school has not resumed after the disaster.

She lamented that the most of her books, school curriculum were swept away in the flood.

At least 8-10 schools have remained shut down due to inundation in the region.
