Ex-PM Surya Bahadur Thapa dies at 87

KATHMANDU: Former Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa died in a hospital in Gurgaon of India on Wednesday evening. He was 87.

Thapa was recently diagnosed with stomach cancer and had undergone gastrectomy at the Medanta Hospital on April 10.

His grandson Siddhartha Thapa confirmed that Nepal's five-time Prime Minister breathed his last in the hospital this evening.

Thapa's condition deteriorated at around 5pm and he was shifted to ICU from cabin. Subsequently, he suffered multiple organ failure and was kept under the ventillator.

Doctors pronounced him dead at around 10:50 pm, according to Siddhartha.

Accompanied by his son, Minister for Commerce and Supplies Sunil Bahadur Thapa, the senior leader of Rashtriya Prajatantra Party had left for New Delhi on March 29. Thapa, who is also a member of the Constituent Assembly, was born in Muga of the eastern district of Dhankuta in March 1928.

He is survived by three daughters and a son.
