Exports through Panitanki halted

New Delhi, February 5:

Operations at Panitanki, the main custom point for Nepal’s exports to third countries and Bangladesh, have come to a halt for the last two days.

The called by the Federal Limbuwan State Council bandh, strike organised by the Indian transport entrepreneurs against the Young Communist League and murder of a businessman near the custom point paralysed the export business.

“One can see three km long queue of cargo trucks heading for Nepal at Panitanki”, under secretary at the Kolkata-based Nepali Consul General’s office Hari Basyal told this daily today.

The four-day bandh at the call of the FLSC has held up the cargo trucks at customs point of Nepal and India, Mechi customs and Panitanki, respectively.

“These trucks ferrying green vegetables, medicines, and other daily necessities could not pass through and waiting at both ends”, he said.

The Panitanki area received additional jolt after a businessman was murdered by a gang of three youths, who were under the influence of drugs, at 11:00 am yesterday, Basyal said. The local businessmen vented their ire on two-wheelers. SSP at Silgudhi police office Rajesh Yadav said the local businessmen were furious against the two-wheelers on the suspicion that three Nepalis who came on a motorbike was responsible for the murder.

The Indian transport entrepreneurs today organised a transport strike to protest against the Young Communist League’s torching of Indian trucks.

Another important custom point Jogbani was also disrupted today due to the protest programme of the transport entrepreneurs.
