Factory worker’s killing fuels strike
Biratnagar, May 10:
Irate workers of Niki Jute Mill located in Morang’s Katahari-9 today announced a strike against the killing of a fellow worker, Panna Lal Mandal, who was beaten to death by the factory manager. The workers vowed to continue their strike till their demands were met.
The workers have forwarded a six-point demand to the mill administration. Their demands include: compensation of Rs 1 million to family of Mandal, educational arrangements for his children, security guarantee for workers and action against the manager.
The workers were led by central general secretary of the Maoist-affiliated All Nepal Trade Union Federation, Babu Raj Gautam. Condemning the incident, Gautam threatened to close down industries and facilities in the area.
A brawl had ensued between Mandal and manager, Kisan Golcha, when the former asked for his dues to be cleared. Mandal was rendered unconscious during a fight between the two. Mandal, who was rushed to the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, died today.
