KATHMANDU, OCTOBER 18

Family and friends today paid tribute to legendary climber Tenjen (Lama) Sherpa, who was buried in an avalanche on Mt Shishapangma on October 7.

On the tenth day of his disappearance, a grand pooja was organised in Lama's honor at Sherpa Sewa Kendra at Bouddha.

Legendary climbers including Kristin Harila, Mingma Sherpa, Simone Moro, Ming Temba Sherpa, Pasang Nurbu Sherpa, Adriana Brownlee, Gelje Sherpa, Mario Velmo and Sebastian Valentini among others attended the heartfelt prayer ceremony. The participants have asked the government to take initiative to recognise Tenjen's contribution to the climbing world.

"Lama's indomitable spirit has always inspired us all with his dedication and kindness. His mountaineering legacy will forever shine brightly, and his memory will be etched in our hearts," Chairman of Seven Summit Treks Mingma Sherpa said, "It's a great loss for the world of mountaineering."

Tenjen's sons - Lakpa Sange and Lakpa Nurbu - wished for their father's body to be found. Kristin said that she wanted to help to grant them their wish. Kristin and Tenjen set the world record climbing all 14 peaks above 8,000m in just 92 days.

"For 92 days, we shared everything - noodle soup, dry fish, cola, warmth, laughter and dreams. I trusted my life to you and you trusted yours to me. Now, it feels like a part of me is gone," Kristin shared.

As per the Buddhist tradition, Lamas offered prayers while his family and friends remembered Tenjen as an inspiration not only for the Nepalis but all mountaineering enthusiasts across the world.
