Floods, landslides trigger mass displacement in west


DHANGADHI: Hundreds of families of Bajura and Achham districts of the Far-Western Region have been displaced after their settlements were completely submerged in the torrential rain that began on Monday.

Seti Zonal Police Office said that many settlements in the hilly districts of Bajura and Achham were at the risk of landslide. Over three dozen households of Bajura’s Kuladevmandu, Brahmatola, Dogadi, Kailasmandau, Pandausen, Bichhya, among others villages, have already been displaced.

Most of the arable land in Wards 3 and 5 of Kuladevmandu VDC was swept away by a landslide, incurring a huge loss, police said. Residents of 26 houses of Ward- 8 have been displaced after their houses were damaged in landslide.

Likewise, local Jagat Nepali of Bajura’s Brahmatola VDC said a bridge constructed over Patri stream was swept away. Police said more than 150 families were displaced after the landslide started in Balelta of Khaptad VDC in Achham. More than 50 houses in Wards 1, 2, 8 and 9 of Ramshikharjhala VDC of Kailali also have been inundated. Among them, 10 families have been taking shelter at the local Rastriya Secondary School.

According to District Police Office, half-a-dozen families have been displaced from Chaumala VDC-3. A child in Sripur VDC was also reportedly swept away by floods. A local resident Tarkaraj Mishra informed five dozen houses in Pahalmanpur VDC-8 have been inundated. The water level has been rising in Bhajani, Lalbojhi, Thapapur, Khailad, Dhanasinghpur, Patharaiya, Pahalmanpur and Joshipur VDCs of Kailali. The villagers were also displaced in last year’s flood.

Meanwhile, Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, Attariya, said that the rainfall would continue for more 3-4 days. Two kids had died due to the landslide on Sunday night after they were buried under landslide in Darchula district.

Meanwhile, 46-year old Arjun Lakai and his daughter Manu (12) of Ghyanghsukathor VDC-6 in Dolakha district died after they were swept away by Ghyangkhola on Monday. The river had swept them at 8 pm while they were returning home from Kathmandu. Inspector Tirtharaj Sigdel said Manu’s body was found in Khandai Tuesday afternoon.

According to a report from Baglung district, 38-year-old Patiram Salami of Talkot in the district’s Jaljala VDC-1 was swept by the flood of Dangakhola in Gwalichaur on Monday night. Police said Salami’s body was recovered on Tuesday. In another incident, a school building collapsed due to landslide in Dakem VDC-7 of Baglung district on Monday. The building of Shibalaya Lower Secondary School collapsed. The landslide has displaced 26 households in the area.

Likewise, 15 families of Tallo Maja village of Damek Kalapatal VDC of Baglung left the village due to landslide fear. Also, three households have been displaced from Dobilla of Bihun VDC.
