FNJ condemns attack on press

Kathmandu, February 1:

Federation of Nepali Journalists today condemned the relentless attack on press by different groups across the country.

In a statement, FNJ has condemned the death threat posed to Siraha correspondent of The Himalayan Times Rajesh Barma.

He was threatened to leave the district in a week by an unknown person via an Indian mobile

number. The journalists’ body has demanded the security of Barma and action against those threatening him.

The umbrella organisation of Nepali journalists has also condemned the attack on Kantipur, The Kathmandu Post and Saptahik by the cadres of Nepal Tarun Dal in Bara.

Leaders of the Nepali Congress-affiliated youth outfit had torched 12,000 copies of the three papers on January 30 on their way to Birgunj from Chitwan for distribution. FNJ has sought a probe into the incident, action against the guilty and compensation for the victims.

Besides, FNJ has also expressed serious concern over the attack on Birgunj-based journalist duo Anil Ojha and Naresh Raj Kharel.

Thrashed by the police, journalist Ojha sustained an injury on the knee and Khanal on the head.

The Federation has demanded a probe into the incident, punishment for the police personnel and treatment and compensation for the journalists.
