Food scarcity likely in Jajarkot from mid-May

Jajarkot, April 18:

With only 400 quintals of rice stored in the godown of Nepal Food Corporation (NFC), Jajarkot district, which needs around 2,300 quintals quota annually, may face food scarcity from the second week of May.

The problem may arise as the allotted amount of rice has not been supplied to the remote district and the remaining stock will not last after the second week of May, NFC branch office chief Bashudev Bhatt said.

Of the 2,000 quintals of rice supplied to the district, only 800 quintals of rice will be distributed

to depots in Nayakwada and Chukha in east, Desera and Garkhakot in west and district headquarters, Khalanga, and adjoining areas will get the remaining amount of rice, the NFC branch office said.

“10 kg of rice will be distributed to each family every Sunday,” Bhatt said.

“If we arrange the distribution system this way, some 90 to 100 quintals of rice will be distributed each week,” he said.

Winter crops production has decreased so the district may face starvation, former DDC chairman Bhairab Sundar Shrestha said.
