Foul smell emanating from the waste at a dumping site in the middle of the city is giving a hard time to the locals of Badimalika Municipality, Bajura.
The dumping site constructed five years ago has turned out to be a headache for the locals. The municipal office collects waste from headquarters Martadi and dumps it at the site. The garbage has contaminated the environment making it hard for the locals to breathe. Operating the dumping site in the open space has defiled the environment.
Waste Management Act has delegated the prerogative of garbage management to the local level. The local authority has to manage waste in such a way that it does not harm the environment and people.
However, the dumping site is directly affecting people, according to Basant Biswokarma, a local.
Durgaraj Maharjan says that dumping waste and burning it on the roadside will have serious impact on the city. The waste flows down to the Bahuli River which mixes with the Budhiganga River.
It is mandatory to carry out environment impact assessment before constructing the dumping site.
The municipality, nevertheless, admitted that it had constructed the site without such assessment.
