KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 9

After over two years of talks and preparations for the establishment of long-awaited National Defence University, Chief of Army Staff General Prabhuram Sharma today laid the foundation stone for the construction of the varsity's infrastructure amidst a function organised in Perunge Danda in Banepa Municipality, Kavre.

The Nepali Army, issuing a press release today, said that NDU would help formulate necessary policies and strategies related to national security and defence, facilitate comprehensive research works and produce the manpower to strengthen and modernise national security.

The university will also fulfil the need for higher education related to national security of officers of the civil service, Nepali army and other security agencies.

The university will help strengthen national security related networks through various educational programmes and academic activities, the press release further reads.

The construction work of the infrastructure for the NDU has started in line with the government's February 2020 decision. Earlier, a 13-member committee was formed to facilitate the construction work.

The NA so far has constructed a 2.6 kilometre gravelled road, 1.3 kilometre perimeter wall, water reservoir tank, deep boring, and threephase electricity line in the area. After the construction of NDU was included in government's plans and policies, the NA has also constructed infrastructure for student accommodation and central library in the presence of high-level army personnel of the NA.
