Gandaki Medical College padlocked over new mother’s death

Pokhara, November 3

Kin of Gita Aryal, who died this morning in Gandaki Medical College, Pokhara, have padlocked the hospital blaming her death on negligence of doctors attending to her.

Aryal was admitted to the health facility last Saturday for childbirth. A resident of Arjun Chaupari  in Syangja, Aryal died at 5:00am today six days after C-section was performed on her. The newborn is alive.

Rajan Aryal, one of the deceased’s relatives, accused the doctors of negligence in handling her case. They have also refused to take the body unless the incident is thoroughly probed.

A team of doctors, including Tika Gurung, had performed the surgery on Arya last Saturday. According to Dr Chandika Pandit, the new mother had a problem in breathing immediately after the baby was taken out. Forty per cent of the body water was concentrated in her lungs and the doctors had drained out the fluid with syringe.

Dr Pandit said they tried their best to save the new mother, but in vain. “We used even high dose medication to control the fever that she developed. Unfortunately, we could not save her,” said the doctor.

Meanwhile, Aryal’s relatives have lodged a complaint at District Administration Office, Kaski, seeking probe into the incident and action against the guilty.
