KATHMANDU, NOVEMBER 18
The Election Commission has imposed Rs 25,000 fine on Rajeev Gurung, a candidate for Gandaki Provincial Assembly from Manang (2) for criticising the poll expenditure ceiling that the EC had recently fixed. Gurung is also Gandaki minister for youths and sports.
He allegedly said that the Rs 33-lakh ceiling on expenditure by a contestant during poll campaigning was absurd.
"In Manang district, a candidate spends Rs 1.5 million just on the nomination day to buy liquor for supporters."
The EC has said that Gurung's remarks went viral on social media. The EC said it decided to impose fine on Gurung as his response to the EC show cause notice was found to be unsatisfactory.
The EC also issued a show cause notice to CPN (Unified Socialist) candidate for the HoR election from Bara-4 Krishna Kumar Shrestha and Democratic Socialist Party-Nepal candidate for PA election from Bara- 4 (2) Jitendra Sonal for campaigning even during the silence period.
