Ghodaghodi locals go on strike demanding action against Mayor's attackers

DHANGADHI: Local residents of Ghodaghodi Municipality have disrupted the vehicular movement along the Sukhkhad road section of East-West Highway staging protest against the assault on municipality Mayor Mamata Prasad Chaudhary since Tuesday morning.

According to Kailali's police chief, Superintendent of Police (SP) Binod Ghimire, students' union affiliated to CPN-UML has disrupted the transport and called on indefinite strike. SP Ghimire, who is at the site, further said, the protesters have demanded to take action against the perpetrators involved in the attack.

A group of assailants attacked Mayor Chaudhary at his residence in Sukhkhad Bazaar, at 8:10 pm yesterday, police said. The group who had reached Chaudhary's residence called him outside and fired shots at him inflicting injuries in his legs and waist, and injured his head with a khukuri, SP Ghimire informed.

Following the incident, police rounded up three cadres of Netra Bikram Chand (Biplav)-led Communist Party involved in the assault. Police have also confiscated a motorcycle (Se 2 Pa 3671) from Sukhkhad Bazaar.

Critically injured Chaudhary was rushed to Nepalgunj for further treatment after receiving primary treatment in Ghodaghodi.

Meanwhile, Chaudhary who was sent to Kathmandu by helicopter this morning has been undergoing treatment at TU Teaching Hospital in Maharajgunj.

The Mayor was recently in news for mediating reconciliation in an alleged ‘witchcraft’ case in the district in which Radha Chaudhary of Deukaliya-5 was ruthlessly thrashed. His party CPN-UML had also formed a probe committee to investigate his involvement in the case, while the Biplav-led party had threatened to take action against Chaudhary.

The Biplav-led party's Seti Bureau member Bibek Kumal denied the party's involvement in the assault. He told THT correspondent over the phone that there was no reason to shoot Chaudhary when the case could have been resolved with talks. Further, Kumal said that the party cadres, arrested on the charge of alleged involvement, are innocent.
