Government not supporting CIEDP: Pathak

Khotang, March 4

Spokesperson for the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons Bishnu Pathak today rued the lack of government support to the commission.

Speaking at an interaction in Khotang district headquarters Diktel today, Pathak said, “The commission, of course, is a high level body so to speak but has failed to fulfill its responsibilities due to lack of cooperation and support from the government.”

Pathak further said, “Earlier, we had to wait for eight months to get an office and now that we’ve got it, neither the government nor the international community is ready to help us.” “It was the United Nations that was so vociferous in calling for the formation of the commission and finally when the commission has been formed the UN is assuming a mysterious silence,” added Pathak.

On the occasion, local Bhim Bahadur Rai of Kahule-3 complained that the whereabouts his wife, who, he claimed, had given herself up to the Maoist rebellion back then, still remains unknown.

“Though her name has been reportedly recommended for inclusion on the official list of the disappeared, the same hasn’t happened,” Rai said.

Most of the participants at the programme urged the commission to work for the conflict victims.
