KATHMANDU, FEBRUARY 25

The National Human Rights Commission has urged the government and demonstrators to exercise maximum restraint from their respective sides in the wake of protest being staged by cadres of political parties over the MCC tabled in Parliament.

Issuing a press release, the rights body expressed concerned about the protest being violent and said it was conducting on-site and media monitoring of the agitation. Recently, dozens of persons, including 21 security personnel, were injured during a scuffle, in addition to physical damage to roadside shops in Baneshwor area. The NHRC said that security personnel had used excessive forces while dispersing the demonstrators.

"Though it is the constitutional right of the citizens to express the differences, and stage peaceful assembly and protest, resorting to violent activities is unfortunate and condemnable.

Such activities are against constitution, and international laws and conventions to which Nepal is a party," the NHCR said. It also warned that violent activities would deprive the right to free movement of the general public.
