Govt pledges aid for flood victims

Kathmandu, July 24:

The Home Ministry said today that the government is committed to providing relief to victims of floods and landslides.

Floods have mainly hit Sunsari, Parsa, Itahari and Saptari districts in recent days. Over 1,500 buildings and 100 houses were inundated in Itahari Municipality and in Inaruwa of Sunsari recently. The Saptakoshi, Sunsarikhola and Budhikhola rivers in Sunsari have caused damage to settlements.

In Saptari, a dozen villages were submerged due to floods in of Rajbiraj.

Under-secretary at the Home Ministry Thir Bahadur GC, who heads the Natural Disaster Management Section, said the government is yet to receive details of the damage floods and landslides have caused in districts.

“We are making preparations to distribute relief in collaboration with local communities and NGOs,” he said.

To expedite relief distribution, the government has formed disaster management committees in all disaster-prone districts. “It is too early to distribute relief and to estimate whether local institutions have enough material or not. But we will certainly provide relief, “ GC added.

Meanwhile, the Red Cross Society distributed relief to flood victims in Sarlahi yesterday.
