KATHMANDU, JULY 31
The government on Thursday reached a seven-point agreement with the families of two men who died in the recent violence in Sunsari's Devanaganj, pledging compensation, an impartial investigation, employment support and the initiation of procedures to declare the deceased martyrs.
The agreement was signed between the Ministry of Home Affairs and the families of Om Prakash Mehta and Jay Prakash Mehta, who died following the July 26 incident at Kaptanganj in Devanaganj Rural Municipality-3.
Home Minister Sudan Gurung, who visited the victims' families in Sunsari on Thursday, said the government remained fully committed to implementing the agreement and ensuring justice for the bereaved families.
Under the agreement, the government will immediately begin the process of declaring the deceased martyrs and provide Rs 1 million in relief to each family.
It has also committed to conducting an impartial and effective investigation into the incident and taking legal action against those found responsible in accordance with prevailing laws.
The agreement further states that the legal status of the madrasa in Devanaganj-3 and other related issues will be examined, while one eligible member from each victim's family will be provided employment opportunities.
The government has also agreed to implement appropriate recommendations made by the investigation committee in accordance with the law and coordinate with the local government to construct a memorial park in honour of the deceased.
In a statement following the agreement, the Home Ministry reiterated the government's commitment to truth, justice, the rule of law and maintaining public confidence.
