India spent IRs 6.4 billion in relief operation in earthquake-hit Nepal

KATHMANDU: India spent IRs 6.40 billion (NRs 10.24 billion) in the Operation Maitri, the mammoth search, rescue and relief operation, that it carried out in Nepal after the massive earthquake hit Nepal on April 25, according to the Indian Ambassador to Nepal, Ranjit Rae.

The Indian enjoy said India is further looking at supporting long-term rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts in Nepal.

"India will be represented in a strong way in the donors' conference and make pledges as well," he said, speaking at an interaction on "Post-Quake Economic and Development Paradigm of Nepal", organised here in the Capital today.

Nepal is organising the international donors' conference in Kathmandu on June 25 to seek support from international communities to rebuild Nepal in the wake of devastating earthquake and its powerful aftershocks.

Nepal has invited Indian Prime Narendra Modi also to attend the conference as a special guest.

A few hours after the devastating earthquake, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the launch of Operation Maitri to support Nepal. Modi himself led the operation, which officially ended on June 4.

India sent Indian Air Force's aircraft -- one C-130J, two C-17 and one IL-76-- with rescuers and relief material in Kathmandu on the same day earthquake rattled Nepal.

Later, C-130J Super Hercules, C-17 Globemaster III, IL-76 Gajraj, medium lifter An-32, C-130J Super Hercules, C-17 Globemaster III, IL-76 Gajraj, medium lifter An-32, eight Medium Lift Helicopters, including Mi-17 V5 and Mi-17, also became part of the operation.

According to the Indian Air Force, its aircraft ferried 1348.995 tonnes of load and evacuated 5188 persons and 780 casualties from different locations.

As many as 170 foreigners and 5,000 Indian citizens were also evacuated during the operation.
