Indian STF releases Nepali man held for ransom as plot comes to light

DHANGADHI: A Nepali national taken hostage by a team of Indian paramilitary force — Special Task Force (STF) — from Tinkuniya in India has been released after six days on Saturday.

A team of STF released Kutwaddhin Miyan (63) of Chipledhungha in Pokhara Lekhnath Metropolitan City-4 on Saturday night from Gauriphanta after the news came to light that Miyan was being held for a ransom of INR 1,200,000.

Miyan who was visiting Tikapur in Kailali on March 19 was held from Tinkuniya in India the same day.

It has been learned that he was guided by two Indian nationals on his visit to Tinkuniya. STF carried him off from a police post.

The incident came to light after the daughter and son-in-law of Miyan, who were heading to Gauriphanta from Pokhara with the ransom of INR 800,000 were intercepted by Indian Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) on March 23.

Meanwhile, Miyan along with his son, daughter and son-in-law returned home to Pokhara on Sunday morning.

According to a source, the two guides were also involved in the abduction of Miyan.

Indian Police released Miyan from Kotawali in Gauriphanta checkpoint.

How Miyan falls prey to Indian paramilitary force?

Kutwaddhin Miyan had stayed at his daughter's home in Narayangadh on March 17 and thereafter went to Kailali instead of Bhairahawa where he was scheduled to attend a wedding ceremony of his nephew. He arrived in Lamki of Kailali on March 19 and took a bus to Tikapur.

He went to meet Ain Bahadur Malla who owed him money from a land transaction. There he came in contact with two Indian nationals, with whom he went to visit Tinkuniya in India.

During his visit to Tinkuniya, while having tea in a restaurant, Indian police carried him off to a police post and forced him to hold a black bag. The police then held him hostage accusing him of buying the contents of the bag while Miyan didn't know what was inside it. He was ferried to Lakhimpur in a police vehicle and was held for a ransom of INR 1,200,000.

He was threatened with imprisonment of eight years if the ransom not paid. He was kept hostage in a house where he was fed. Finally, Miyan agreed to pay a ransom of INR 800,000.

Miyan's son, two daughters, and son-in-law arrived in Dhangadhi with the ransom money. The son-in-law committed to paying the ransom only after learning about his father-in-law's condition. He saw Miyan and five others in a vehicle. Subsequently, he headed for Gauriphanta in order to pay the ransom. But he was intercepted by the SSB at the border point. He informed the security personnel about the abduction. The SSB then informed Trinagar-based police post and Nepal Police who carried out investigation.

The news of the abduction came out by then, after which Miyan was left in Gauriphanta on Saturday.

It has been learned that the mobile phone used by the STF belonged to Niraj Gupta, owner of Balaji Medical.

The Indian police have kept silence on the incident while STF team involved in holding Miyan for ransom are not to be found. Although Miyan was set free, the perpetrators have seized his wrist watch, a gold ring of one tola and Rs 12,000.
