KATHMANDU, June 4

Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi, as a part of Apollo's initiative, has conducted an interactive programme with the healthcare fraternity of Nepal at Hotel Radisson, on Friday.

The event was led by doctors of Indraprastha Apollo Hospital which included Dr M S Kanwar, Senior Consultant, Department of Pulmonology, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine and Dr Vanita Arora, Senior Consultant, Cardiac Electrophysiologist & Interventional Cardiologist and Dr Mukesh Goel, Senior Consultant, Cardiothoracic Heart & Lung Transplant Surgery.

The programme addressed the complexities of lung and heart diseases and discussed the advanced treatment modalities that is currently available in India.

Dr M S Kanwar shared, "The lung transplant is not just a surgery but a process starting with extensive pre-lung transplant work up and optimal stabilization of the patients of end-stage lung diseases like IPF, COPD, Emphysema, Covid Fibrosis, Pulmonary Hypertension and many others. It also involves lung and general rehabilitation, optimal oxygen therapy and positive pressure ventilation, ECMO etc. Lung transplant surgery is complex and so is the immediate and long term post-operative care. Lung transplants which have been popular in advanced countries for decades with constant annual increase in the number of lung transplants, is now available in India also with comparable outcomes."

Indraprastha Apollo Hospital is said to be one of the leading transplant centre for kidney, liver and bone marrow and has accomplished heart transplant as well.

According to Dr Vanita Arora, "In patients of LV dysfunction, the cause of high mortality is either heart pump failure or sudden cardiac arrest. After careful screening patients can be saved by implanting Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy Device or Automatic Implantable Defibrillator Devices."
