Saptari police firing: One more succumbs to injuries

RAJBIRAJ: One more person who was injured in Monday's Saptari police firing died during the course of treatment on Wednesday morning.

Birendra Mahato of Maleth VDC-2 breathed his last at the Dharan-based BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences this morning.

With this, death toll in the incident has reached four.

He was hit by bullet in his abdomen, according to Sunil Kumar Jha, district president of Sadbhawana Party.

Several people are admitted to the BPKIHS with bullet injuries.

Earlier, United Democratic Madhesi Front had claimed that four persons were killed in “police suppression of people’s peaceful demonstration” in Saptari. The government, however, put the casualties at three.

Casualties were reported after police opened fired at violent protesters outside the venue of CPN-UML’s programme. In their bid to disrupt the CPN-UML’s Mechi-Mahakali campaign, the UDMF cadres reportedly hurled petrol bombs at security personnel and obstructed vehicular movement in Saptari on Monday. Explosives were also planted near the UML’s programme venue.

UDMF cadres have enforced general shutdown in the district for the second day.

They have demanded action against those responsible for the loss of life, compensation to the bereaved families and free treatment for the injured.
