Iodised salt use low in terai area

A survey conducted in the VDCs bordering India has revealed that few people use iodised salt there. Villagers of VDCs in Rupandehi, Nawalparasi, Kapilvastu and Dang were questioned in the survey.

The survey, carried out by Social Marketing and Distribution Nepal, reveals that in the 35 VDCs of Rupandehi, only 43 per cent villagers use iodized salt. Most villagers use common salt, which does not contain iodine, said Deepak Sharma of SMDN. Only five per cent people use iodized salt in Ama and Rayapur VDCs of Rupandehi. Twenty-six per cent people use iodised salt in Kapilvastu, 42 per cent in Dang and 48 per cent in Nawalparasi districts.

However, 80 per cent villagers use iodized salt in Makrahar VDC, 63 pc in Gangoliya VDC, 72 per cent in Chiliya VDC and as many as 96 per cent in Karahiya VDC.
