KATHMANDU, MARCH 14
Today, following Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal's vote of confidence, a journalist asked Ranjita Shrestha, Nagarik Unmukti Party's president at the Lower House in New Baneshwor, "Is the Nagrik Unmukti Party (NUP) the husband's party or the wife's?"
Ranjita replied that NUP is the people's party. However, Resham Lal Chaudhary's early morning Facebook post on Wednesday revealed the depth of conflict between Ranjita and Resham.
The Nagarik Unmukti Party is embroiled in a power struggle between its president, Ranjita Shrestha, and Resham Lal Chaudhary. Who also happen to be husband and wife.
Ranjita Shrestha admitted today, after giving Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal a vote of confidence, that she and Resham Chaudhary had ideological differences. She did, however, clarify that it would have no impact on their family matters.
Resham Chaudhary, the founder of NUP, took to Facebook on Wednesday morning, posting a lengthy status expressing his inability to explain the situation or convince Ranjita.
"It is not about winning or losing. Dahal and Oli won today. Deuba will win again tomorrow. Any coalition formed for the formation of a government is bound to disband small parties. So let us not follow anyone; let us create our own party," he wrote.
His post went on to say that it is not a domestic dispute, but rather a political dilemma. "This is what I get. Going after any alliance means sinking the party; lawmakers from the UML, Maoists, and Congress are confident in their party leadership. But what about small parties such as the CPN (US), JSP-N, NUP, LSP-N, RSP, and the RPP? So let us understand the situation; let us not support any alliance."
He also requested that Ranjita Shrestha adhere to NUP principles, policies, and central committee decisions, and to refrain from throwing mud at each other. "I travelled all the way from Kailali to Kathmandu and sat with her for two hours; despite this, she refused to give up and insisted on supporting PM Dahal in today's vote of confidence."
Following her prior decision. Ranjita Shrestha claimed that Resham wrote the status in front of her after giving PM Dahal a vote of confidence and then speaking to mediapersons at the House of Representatives in New Baneshwor in the afternoon.
"We discussed this yesterday. Resham and I sat together and talked about NUP. Based on that, he wrote today's post," Ranjita stated. She also said that disagreements would not have an impact on the family.
He and I have differing perspectives on the party. However, family is a separate thing. The party is a separate thing. Family doesn't break because of different opinions' Ranjita repeated, "I was with him (Resham Chaudhary) when he wrote the status."
She also stated that there were no issues with their family relationship. She said they had been together for 25 years and added, "We do not have anything like that in our family." Ranjita stated that because people with diverse perspectives will join the party, it will be properly formed and strengthened.
Previously, the NUP convention held at Kailali in Tikapur unanimously elected Resham Chaudhary as its president. However, the election commission did not agree to update the party's records in accordance with the convention's decision, claiming that Chaudhary has been convicted of criminal charges and served a prison sentence.
Ranjita stated that Resham had accepted the matter, which was rejected by the Election Commission as the party president. Resham was unanimously elected president after the convention. However, the Election Commission's decision did not favour him and everyone's equal before the eyes of policy and law.
