KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 10
CPN (UML) Senior Vice-Chair Ishwor Pokharel has announced his candidacy for the post of party chair.
In an interaction with editors today, on the eve of the 11th National Congress of UML, scheduled to be held in Kathmandu from December 13 to 15, Pokharel stated that he is filing his candidacy in deference to the sentiments of party leaders and cadres who favor running the party through inclusive procedures, including a transparent leadership transition.
Pokharel emphasized that election outcomes-whether victory or defeat-should be accepted as a natural part of the democratic process. He affirmed that he will remain steadfastly committed to the party regardless of the election results.
In response to a question, the Senior Vice-Chair expressed that anyone willing to participate in politics should be allowed to do so, in accordance with the state constitution, the party statute, international best practices, and the aspirations of the people.
Regarding the ongoing consideration of the restoration of the House of Representatives in the courts, Pokharel stated that there was no need to comment at this time. However, he affirmed that the UML will participate in the upcoming elections, consistent with its commitment to democracy and electoral processes.
He further reiterated the party's support for unity among the leftist forces in the country.
The interaction was attended by Party Vice-Chair Ashtalakshmi Shakya, Yubaraj Gyawali, Surendra Pandey, and Secretaries Yogesh Bhattarai and Gokarna Bista, among others.
