Jailbirds send money home

Jailbirds of Tanahun Prison have started sending money to their homes for Dashain.

Security guard Prem Pariyar at Tanahun Prison said that more than 40 prisoners have sent money collected by selling hand-woven stools to their homes. According to Pariyar, jailbirds have been sending around Rs 3,000 to Rs 5,000 to their families.

Tirthnath Khanal, chief at the Tanahun Prison, said that many jailbirds including Bhul Bahadur Thapa, Tikarma BK, Man Bahadur Gharti and Bir Bahadur BK had earned a good income by selling stools.

Contractor Govind Sedhai from among the jailbirds said that he earns up to Rs 2 lakh a year by selling stools made of bamboo. Prison source said a stool can fetch up to Rs 550.
