Janajatis stage sit-in

Kathmandu, May 25:

The Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN) organised a 34-hour sit-in at Maitighar Mandala to pressurise the government in meeting its demands.

Among other things, the indigenous nationalities have been demanding restructuring of the state on the basis of ethnicity, representation in the constituent assembly with ethnic and lingual identity, and the adoption of a proportional electoral system. “The indigenous nationalities organised the sit-in at 8 am on May 24. The sit-in lasted till 6 pm today,” Pasang Sherpa, the NEFIN president, said.“We launched the protest as three rounds of talks did not yield any results,” he added.
