Janamorcha to decide Amik’s fate today

Kathmandu, August 4:

A central committee meeting of the Janamorcha Nepal began here today under the chairmanship of party chief Amik Sherchan.

Sherchan enraged party leaders after he voted for Nepali Congress candidate Dr Ram Baran Yadav for the post of president.

The party is likely to suspend or dismiss him for his role in the presidential election. Seven other Janamorcha Constituent Assembly members had voted for CPN-Maoist backed candidate

Ram Raja Prasad Singh in the presidential election.

“The meeting resumed today. We have not decided anything yet,” Janamorcha Nepal leader Giri Raj Mani Pokharel, who is also Minister for Health and Population, told this daily.

Asked to comment on chances of Sherchan’s expulsion, party vice-president Lila Mani Pokharel said the issue probably would be finalised at tomorrow’s meeting. “I do

not want to comment on this before the party makes its decision.”

The party’s intended punitive action against Sherchan was not only related to his act of crossing the floor, Pokharel said, adding that Pokharel had made other mistakes as well. He did not elaborate.

Janamorcha treasurer Biswanath Shah said the party’s agendas were not discussed at today’s

meeting.

“The central committee will discuss all agendas tomorrow.” Sherchan’s expulsion was indeed an agenda of the meeting, he said.

Sherchan had contested the Constituent Assembly polls from Chitwan-5. The CPN-Maoist had supported Sherchan in his bid to get elected.
