Kathmandu , April 26

Two Japanese climbers have successfully scaled the Khangchung Nup making the first ever ascent of the 6,063-metre mountain from the northwest side.

According to Pasnag Kidar Sherpa, Managing Director at Khangri Trek Pvt Ltd said that the two alpinists - Takeshi Tani and Toshiyuki Yamada - stood atop the peak, which is located in the Khumbu region along the Mahalangur range, east of the Gokyo Glacier, on April 23 in an alpine style.

Khangchung Nup, which is also known as one of the UIAA peaks in Nepal was never scaled before from its northwest ridge, Sherpa, who is also an IFMGA guide, said, adding that his company handled their expedition with the support from the Japanese Alpine Club in the spring season.

"We made Kangchung-Nup (6089m) northwest face. Weather and conditions were perfect and we had an amazing experience on a truly beautiful wall," Toshiyuki Yamada posted on Instagram after completing the nearly 900-metre northwest route of the peak.

Two climbers have already descended to the base camp safely, Pasang Kidar Sherpa said. According to the Department of Tourism, only two climbers obtained a permit for the UIAA peak – Kangchung – expedition this season.

Climbing guide Ngima Sherpa who accompanied them to Gokyo said that it was a proud moment that they made it to the top of the peak for the first time using extremely new route this season.

"They have done it in an alone style," he added.
