Kalyan Gurung new NSU-D prez

Nepalgunj, July 16:

The convention of the Nepali Congress (Democratic)-affiliated Nepal Students’ Union has elected Kalyan Gurung as the union’s new president.

Gurung secured 442 votes while his nearest rival got 368 votes.

Another contender for the post of president Ram Krishna Chitrakar polled 357 votes.

The convention ended today after a week.

After being declared winner in the election, Gurung said his success was a victory of the ideology of inclusive democratic republic and of all students.

Dambar Khadka from the eastern region, Ratna Bahadur Karki from the central region, Guru Prasad Baral from the western region, Rishikesh Jung Shah from the mid-western region and Nayan Singh Mahar from the far-western region were elected vice-presidents.

A total of 12 persons were in the fray for the posts of vice-presidents.

Pratima Gautam was elected general secretary. She received 388 votes.

Her nearest rival Umesh Kumar Yadav secured 316 votes.

Roshan Shrestha from the eastern region, Mithilesh Kumar Mishra from the central region, Rajesh Gyawali from the western region and Navaraj Bhatta from the far-western region were elected joint general secretaries.

Chhiring Dorje Lama was elected to represent indigenous communities, Santosh Mothe from Dalit, Bijay Sarraf from the Madhesi community, Kamala Neupane from the women and Top Bahadur Rawat from the mid-western region.

Altogether 26 others were elected for different posts.

The three-day convention, which began on July 10, was stretched over seven days after a dispute over the selection of representatives to the convention.

Voting was held at 3 pm yesterday after the dispute was settled.

Voting ended at 11 pm yesterday and the counting began at 2 pm today and results were published one hour later.
