KATHMANDU, MAY 23

A climber from Kenya who went missing near Everest summit has been found dead while whereabouts of his Sherpa guide is still unknown, base camp officials said.

Rescuers from Seven Summit Treks discovered body of Cheruiyot Kirui from a few metres below the summit point of Mt Everest, base camp officials said.

The fate of Nawang Sherpa, who was with Kirui in the death zone, is still unknown, according to them. Kirui who attempted scale Everest without using supplemental oxygen went out of contact from the Bishop Rock. "Nawang had last communicated with the base camp officials from Bishop Rock that Kirui refused to return and even consume bottled oxygen but showed abnormal behaviour," they said.

Climbers who are on summit push today have been trying to locate Nawang, officials added.
