KMC strike hits people hard

Kathmandu, August 20:

All work in the only metropolis in the country has ground to a halt due to a strike launched by different employees’ unions in the Kathmandu Metropolitan City since two days.

Many people were compelled to return home empty-handed because of the strike. “They fight with each other and we have to suffer,” said one of the visitors. He was surprised to see no one on the KMC premises. The KMC today wore a deserted look. The few people on the KMC premises were looking for the officials to have their work done.

Meanwhile, the seven different democratic unions and the four left-aligned employees organisations of the KMC and the representatives of Ministry of Local Development reached an agreement today.

The agitating unions agreed to resume service from tomorrow. The 12-point agreement with the government included making provisions to promote City Police, the KMC staffs and using the vehicles in the KMC exclusively for KMC’s official purposes. The unions have agreed to devise employees’ code of conduct and implement them.
