Koshi victims protest over relief

INARUWA: The people affected by the Koshi flood declared a protest from Thursday against lack of commitment from the government on their issues. They obstructed the East-West Highway on Thursday morning from 8am to 10 pm as the first part of their multi-level protests.

According to the local administration, the flood victims have not received the amount meant to be distributed as relief to the victims. The committee formed under the then government led by the Unified CPN-Maoist had recommended a financial assistance of Rs. 250,000 per bigaha of land to the flood victims who fall in the red band or those who lost their homes and entire land due to the floods, Rs. 200,000 per bigaha to the people included in the red band whose land was inundated and Rs. 100,000 per bigaha to people included in the yellow band and Rs. 50,000 per bigaha to people whose land suffered minor damages.

The agitated Koshi victims have stated that they will continue the movement until the government provides them with the relief as per the recommendation of the committee.
