KU teachers boycott classes

Kavre, August 14 :

Dr Dandapani Neupane, an administrative staffer at the Kathmandu University sustained injuries when the KU teachers and representatives of the Joint Peoples’ Movement Committee, Dhulikhel, clashed today.

The teachers and the JPMC representatives clashed when the latter were returning after submitting a memorandum to the KU Vice Chancellor demanding resumption of educational activities in the university.

KU teachers have been agitating for three months demanding fulfilment of their eight-point demands including recognition to the teachers’ association, reinstatement of sacked professor Dr Boris Niraula and yesterday they had announced boycotting of classes for an indefinite period and sought resignation of vice-chancellor and other high-ranking officials in the university.

The KU teachers said the JPMC was trying to ignore the issues raised by the agitating teachers.

The JPMC tried to broker talks between the KU administration and the protesting teachers and, “an agreement has been reached to to hold talks tomorrow,” said chairman of the Nepali Congress (Democratic) Dhulikhel town committee, Samir Byanju.

KU VC Dr Suresh Raj Sharma said the KU regulation has no provision for the teachers’ association. “The teachers’ association itself is not a legal entity. That will only lead to the closure of the university and disrupt the classes. Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala will be consulted for solving the problem,” Dr Sharma said.
